Africa’s growth challenges remain a concern and young Africans are finding themselves independently accountable for their individual development. One way young Africans seek to better themselves, improve their situations and contribute to their communities and nations, is through seeking opportunities abroad. However, as a group, young Africans have faced and continue to face barriers to pursuing opportunities abroad.
Whether they seek employment, to further their education, or to expand their entrepreneurial endeavors to a broader client or investment base, at JAPA.RUN, we believe there is a more valuable way forward where young Africans utilize technology to breakdown these barriers. Rather than forging ahead alone, JAPA.RUN enables young Africans to leverage the knowledge of and create community with those who have come before them and those on similar paths. Through groups and the community they create, users have the opportunity to get help easily.
‘Japa’ is Nigerian slang derived from the Yoruba language. It means “to run swiftly” away. To ‘Japa’ means to run, avoid, terminate or remove yourself from an unpleasant situation. Often the referenced unpleasant situation is encompassed by another Nigerian slang word ‘Sapa.’ ‘Sapa’ means lacking money or lacking direction.
The experience of ‘Sapa’ is frequently the drive to ‘Japa.’
